On the influence of elasticity on propeller performance: a parametric study

Abstract The aerodynamic performance of propellers strongly depends on their geometry and, consequently, aeroelastic deformations. Knowledge the extent impact is crucial for overall aircraft performance. An integrated simulation environment steady propeller simulations presented. applied to determine elastic deformations module includes a blade element momentum approach calculate loads. structural based finite beam elements, according Timoshenko theory, including moderate deflections. Several fixed-pitch with thin-walled cross sections made both isotropic and non-isotropic materials are investigated. essential parameters varied: diameter, disc loading, sweep, material, rotational, flight velocity. relative change thrust between rigid blades quantifies elasticity. Swept large diameters or low loadings can decrease significantly. High velocities material stiffness amplify this tendency. Performance calculations without consideration elasticity lead decreased efficiency. To avoid cost- time-intense redesigns, should be considered swept planforms loadings.
